'Academics House' (named after Maxim Gorky*)

The Vladimir Palace (Russian: Влади́мирский дворе́ц, Vladimirsky dvorets) was the last imperial palace to be constructed in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

This unique building has a special place among the most famous palaces and mansions of St. Petersburg. Its luxurious interiors are a wonderful monument of
architecture and art of the second half of XIX - early XX centuries.  It was designed for Alexander II's son, Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of
Russia. Construction work lasted from 1867 to 1872. Like the Winter Palace and the Marble Palace, the Vladimir Palace
fronts Palace Embankment. Water frontage on the Neva was extremely prized by the Russian aristocracy. So the Palace became one of the centers of cultural life of Saint
Petersburg high society.

In 1920 upon an initiative of Maxim Gorky  the Palace became the residence of ‘Academics’ House' - the oldest club of scientific intellectuals in Russia.

In the research and educational work of the 'Academics' House' in different years were engaged  such world-renowned scientists as I.P.Pavlov, L.S.Berg, N.I.Vavilov, V.I.Vernadskiy, A.F.Ioffe.

In 1920 at the invitation of M.Gorky 'Academics' House' visited the English writer Herbert Wells.  The first chairman of the Council of
'Academics' House' was an academician genetic scientist N.I.Vavilov. From the 30s of XX century here were created scientific sections and were conducted
scientific conferences. Throughout its history, 'Academics' House’ visited a lot of people that symbolized the history and policy of Russia, its scientific and cultural life.

Until now 'Academics' House' carefully preserves unique collections of art of The Vladimir Palace and conducts serious restoration works of the building and its interiors. The Palace is an architectural monument of federal significance.

* - Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) famous Russian short-story writer and novelist who first attracted attention with his naturalistic and sympathetic stories of tramps and social outcasts and later wrote other stories, novels, and plays, including his famous The Lower Depths.
